Renovating a basement is an effective way for homeowners to increase the amount of space they have within a property.
An Independent article points out that expanding space underneath a home in this manner “need not be the preserve of the rich and famous”, something DIY enthusiasts may be interested to hear.
Indeed, one of those to have recently done this was former teacher Nina Kingsmill Moore who revealed that adding a baseman increase the size of her London home by 25 per cent, freeing up more space for her growing family.
Simon Albertini, of estate agent Friend & Falcke, states that the creation of additional space that basements provide are “extremely attractive given the current fashion for relaxed entertaining and open-plan living”.
However, Yasmin Chopin, of Property Care Association, pointed out the need for such a home improvement project to be carried out properly, as “a poorly waterproofed basement can be subject to catastrophic flooding”.
Meanwhile, recent Abbey research revealed that a basement or loft conversion adds just over ยฃ13,000 in value to the typical home.
