Sian Berry, writing in a column for the Guardian, is encouraged that more and more people are fixing or restyling their possessions themselves.
This, she says, can help "keep memories alive" and has clear financial benefits for the general public.
"The recession has prompted a revival in making and mending things." says Ms Berry, who believes DIY is "easier" than people often think.
However, Ms Berry believes people are undertaking DIY for reasons beyond those of a financial nature. She adds that the "feeling of pride you get from having made or mended something yourself is huge".
This follows advice given to Brits from moneysupermarket.com, which said that a few amendments around the home can help reduce utility bills.
Adequate insulation and the installation of double glazing could all help consumers save on their gas and electricity, according to the price comparison website.
