Eco-friendly DIY does not have to be to the detriment of a property’s appearance, it has been claimed.
Although it retains the look of a red-brick Victorian semi-detached home, Sarah Harrison points out that various home improvements has seen her house’s energy efficiency be improved by 80 per cent.
“They expect a modern look and are surprised you can make it energy efficient without giving up the period aspects,” she tells the Independent.
Pointing out that the heating was barely working when she first bought the property, DIY work has seen solar panels fitted on to the roof, windows insulated and sustainable oak flooring installed.
Those looking to implement eco-friendly home improvements were advised by Ms Harrison that this does not need to be all done at once, as “you could do it room by room as you decorate“.
Getting to grips with eco DIY could be advisable as the Energy Saving Trust reveals that fitting cavity wall insulation could see utility bills for a three-bedroom semi-detached property fall by ยฃ115 a year.
